Welcome

Serving central Nova Scotia since 2014, the Truro Housing Outreach Society (THOS) is a registered nonprofit and charitable society that works to address housing insecurity in our community. Our facility, Haven House, provides emergency and transitional beds, personal care supplies, food, housing support, eviction prevention, and advocacy to anyone over the age of sixteen. We apply housing first, rapid re-housing, shelter diversion and harm reduction principles within our service delivery model, client case management and care plans. To date, THOS has served more than 650 individual clients. Unfortunately, due to the current housing crisis and heightened need due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we often operate at capacity.

Primary Services Offered

Operating twenty four hours a day at our emergency/transitional housing facility at 29 Arthur St.

Housing Support

Connecting individuals and families to safe, affordable, and sustainable housing.
Providing Housing Support Workers to assist clients in finding and maintaining housing.
Offering eviction prevention support and mediation with landlords.

Outreach Services

Outreach Case Management providing on-the-ground support for individuals experiencing homelessness
Building relationships and trust with vulnerable community members.
Providing direct support with basic needs, safety planning, immediate crisis intervention and survival support.

System Navigation

Assisting clients in accessing community resources, health care, and income supports.
Offering guidance on navigating bureaucratic processes such as ID replacement, benefits, and applications.

Community Education & Advocacy

Raising awareness about homelessness and housing insecurity in Colchester, Truro, and East Hants.
Advocating for systemic changes to improve housing access and affordability.
Partnering with organizations like GEO Nova Scotia to address digital access barriers.

Community Trustee

Help with budgeting
Support with money managment
Direct payments to things like rent and utilities
Advocacy and resource navigation
